Au Pair
An Au Pair is a domestic assistant aged 18-27 who has little or no formal training in childcare. Typically, Au Pairs take on a share of the family's responsibility for childcare as well as some housework. In return, families offer Au Pairs a monetary allowance for personal use (ranging between £100 and 120 per month), food and accommodation. Au Pairs typically work 25 hours/ week.
It is useful to know in advance that an Au Pair’s standard responsibilities typically include:
- Playing with the children and keeping them safe.
- Preparing meals and snacks for the children.
- Helping to keep the children’s room tidy.
- Bathing and dressing the children.
- Helping school age kids by packing lunches, taking them to school and helping with homework.
- Entertaining the children and teaching them about one’s culture.
- Taking the children on outings to parks, playgroups and other activities.
- Traveling with the host family on vacations and providing care for the children.
